Tom Szurlinski

Tom Szurlinski is a Staff Attorney for the Boone County Sheriff’s Office. He spent the majority of his career in law enforcement and legal-related services.  He has over 30 years of experience as a law enforcement officer, including nearly eight years as the Chief of Police for the Florence Police Department.  Tom is a Kentucky licensed attorney and a Kentucky Law Enforcement Council certified police instructor.  His previous experiences include serving as a corrections officer and firefighter/paramedic. 

Tom served as an instructor with the Department of Criminal Justice Training from 2014 through 2016. He worked for Taliaferro, Carran & Keyes, PLLC of Covington as an Attorney practicing in the civil rights defense, personal injury, and employment legal areas, from 2013 through 2014. Most of his career was serving as a police officer, Detective, Sergeant, Assistant Chief, Communications Center Director, Accreditation Manager, and finally as Chief of Police for the Florence Police Department from 1985 through 2013. Prior to this, he served as a corrections officer for the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department in Cincinnati, Ohio.

In 1984, Tom graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Cincinnati with a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice.

In 1998, he earned his Juris Doctorate and graduated Cum Laude from of the Salmon P. Chase College of Law. Also in 1998, he graduated from the Northwestern University Traffic Institute’s School of Police Staff and Command.

Tom serves as the Attorney for the Kentucky Law Enforcement Council’s Professional Standards Committee.
