Shawn Butler

Shawn Butler has been in law enforcement for over 33 years and is currently the Executive Director for the Kentucky Association of Chiefs of Police (KACP).

He is a graduate of Northern Kentucky University with a degree in Law Enforcement. He has received over 2000 hours of law enforcement training, is a certified instructor through the Kentucky Law Enforcement Council, and is a graduate of Kentucky’s Criminal Justice Executive Development Program, Class 1, and the FBI National Academy, Session 220.

Prior to his current KACP he served with the Independence Police Department. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 1996 where he served as the commander of the Administrative Section and the Criminal Investigations Section. He was promoted to rank of Lieutenant in 1998 where he served as the Assistant Police Chief. In 2000 he was appointed Police Chief for the City of Independence where he served until July of 2015. During his tenure as Police Chief the police department became accredited by the Kentucky Association of Chief’s of Police, and received awards for “The Best Crime Prevention Program in Kentucky” in 2002, 2003, and 2004.

He is the past President of the Northern Kentucky Police Chief’s Association, Kenton County Police Chief’s Association, and the Kentucky Association of Chief’s of Police. In 2003 Chief Butler was named “Northern Kentucky Police Chief of the Year” by the Northern Kentucky Area Development District. In 2003 Chief Butler also received the “Tri-State Police Chief of the Year” award from the Tri-State Public Recognition Committee. In 2004 Chief Butler was named “Kentucky Police Chief of the Year” by the Kentucky Association of Chiefs of Police. In 2014 he was awarded the “Supporter of the Year” by the Kentucky Sheriff’s Association for his work with Sheriff’s Offices and the KACP Accreditation Program.

Shawn serves on the Instructor Certification Committee of the Kentucky Law Enforcement Council.
