On April 29, 2019, the Southern Police Institute hosted a Leaders Panel on Organizational Change and Change Management in McCandless Hall. The members of the panel were Commissioner Rick Sanders, Kentucky State Police, Chief Steve Conrad, Louisville Metro Police Department, and Chief Gary D. Lewis, Jr., University of Louisville Police Department.

The three leaders exchanged questions and advice on a number of topics about how they provide leadership in times of change. The chief executives responded to their thoughts on changing organizational cultures as well as the power of social media and other technology in providing communication and outreach-internally and externally. They stimulated an interesting discussion on how modern cultural norms are affecting recruitment and retention (i.e., tattoos, drugs, and uniform policies). Having sitting executives together on this panel was both informative and of great interest to an audience consisting of officers from agencies across the country. SPI’s goal in hosting the panel of leaders was to develop valuable skills and share innovative ideas currently under consideration by executives leading state, municipal and campus law enforcement organizations.
