The Kentucky State Police Academy became a CrossFit Affiliate. The Thin Gray Line CrossFit is a nonprofit CrossFit affiliate with the academy. To qualify for a Law Enforcement affiliation, you must train law enforcement or fire station personnel only and be free of charge.

Since CrossFit has revolutionized the fitness industry, it has put a new “purpose behind PT.” There are currently more than 13,000 CrossFit gyms (referred to as “boxes”) in the world. To put that in perspective, there are between 12,000 and 13,000 Starbucks locations in the US. Additionally, there are over 4,000,000 people who identify as CrossFit athletes. CrossFit is the most intense, challenging, and meaningful method of physical training. Because of its popularity and functionality, Captain Kyle Nall said, “It was the best way for me to help guide the incoming cadets into preparing themselves physically for the Academy.” Captain Nall went to Indianapolis in October and attained his L1 CrossFit Coaching Certificate. Once he completed the program, he applied for a nonprofit affiliation for the Kentucky State Police Academy. The Academy is now a Thin Gray Line CrossFit.

With this affiliation in place, Captain Nall created 31 Hero WODs (Workout Of the Day) that were designed to honor our agency’s 31 fallen troopers/officers. The Hero WODs have rep schemes and time limitations that correlate with the service of the fallen trooper/officer. For example: End of Watch Dates, badge numbers, years of service, age of the fallen, etc. are taken into consideration with the design of the workout. The cadets in Cadet Class 96 and Cadet Class 97 were the first two cadet classes to complete these Hero WODs.
