John P. Hunt

Sheriff John P. Hunt’s career began as a dispatcher for the Floyd County Sheriff's Office in 1985. After dispatching, he worked for the Prestonsburg Police Department from 1986-1991. In 1999, John began his twenty-year career with the Kentucky State Police, where he retired in 2011 with the rank of Sergeant. He has been Sheriff of the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office since October 2014.

John is a 1989 graduate of the Department of Criminal Justice Training Basic Training and a 1991 graduate of the Kentucky State Police Academy. During his career, John has received many accolades. However, he is most proud of being awarded the Governor's Citation for Life Saving and the Meritorious Service with Valor Awards.

He serves on the Kentucky Sheriff’s Association Board of Directors, the Kentucky Association of County Officials Board of Directors, the Kentucky Emergency Response Board of Commissioners, and the National Association of County Officials Justice and Public Safety Committee. He was appointed to serve on the Kentucky Law Enforcement Council in July 2022. He serves on the Instructor Certification Committee.

Sheriff Hunt resides in Prestonsburg with his wife Rebecca, daughter Hannah and son Gabe.
